Marmite and cucumber sandwiches

Those of you who have been following the fevered debate on the virtues (or otherwise) of Marmite may require proof that I have been as good as my word and knocked up a Marmite and cucumber sandwich. So here it is!

I realised there were many possible permutations. White or brown bread (I chose white), butter or no butter, how much Marmite (a light smear), how thickly the cucumber should be sliced (thinly, IMO) and whether it should or shouldn't be peeled (it should, I think).

And the verdict? Very nice. Not quite as nice as cucumber sandwiches on their own but much better than I would have imagined. I unreservedly take back my critical comments about the combination. But I still reckon £31.50 is a silly amount to charge for afternoon tea, Marmite sandwiches or not ;-)

Marmite is surely an invention of the devil?

That brings it all back. I'm going to have to go and buy a cucumber now. Your sandwich looks absolutely delicious, although it has a bit too much cucumber on it imho.

Whoever posted about the cucumber going soggy in response to the initial post is missing a trick. That's when M+C butties are at their finest!

I thought I was the only person who ate these! Honestly. I really thought I had invented them myself and it was a true guilty (and secret) pleasure! How funny! Craving one now.

Well, I hadn't heard of them, Helen so maybe they're everyone's guilty little secret. But quite a harmless one, it must be said.

You could make them slightly soggier clairef, if you salted the cucumber first and let it drain so that it was soft rather than crunchy but too much salt I think. But soggy tomato sandwiches - now you're talking!

notSupermum: I think you owe it to yourself to give Marmite another go after all this impassioned debate. Just spread it very, verrry, thinly . . .

I think it can scarcely get more frugal than Marmite and cucumber butties and although I really didn't fancy the idea before, all this talk is making me want to go and fix one up right now! X-D

That's the way it gets you, Career Misfit. Beware!

I'm very glad you tried them for yourself, very brave ;) I also like cucumber and peanut butter - another cheapie that's filling and has some protein. I have to admit I am a non-peeler or at the very most I take a few strips off leaving a decorative green zebra effect. But yes, heaps of thinly sliced is better than chunky :)

And sorry Clairef, whilst some sandwiches are conducive to being "soggy " ( pan bagnat/muffalettas spring to mind ) cucumber with or without marmite is not one of them, to my taste :D

Hmmm. Not so convinced about that, anonymous - though look what I said about Marmite and cucumber . . .
What I do like with peanut butter is grated carrot

Marmite and cream cheese. Yum.

Not convinced by the cucumber, but I'm not that keen on cucumber at the best of times.

Oh, god. Don't say I'm going to have to try Marmite and cream cheese, Boak. Not sure I can cope with that . . .

My contribution: Tuna and banana sandwiches are heaven! (don't mix tuna with anything like mayo - eww!) - mix it with mashed banana. Mmmm.

What's also good is marmite, cucumber and cheese sandwiches, and it's what I've made for my husband and children for lunch tomorrow. I'm never usually that organised.

Also marmite and peanut butter, it's like a poor interpretation of satay, very poor it has to be said but it really does hit the spot.
